Threadless

Thought I should startup a threadless account,
considering all my new T-shirt designs.

Plus it helps promote, right?

Moose-Stache Revised

So I had a sketch of moose stache scanned in, which I didn't like to be honest.
This is much, much better.
Actually the first one was so bad, I can't bare to look at it anymore (consider it banished to room 101).
I need to adjust the lower case "h", it's looking like the letter "R" right now

Which leads me to my weekend adventures.
I galavanted through Pasadena & in the midst of it all.. grabbed a couple of books.

The first one being "Hand Job" by Michael Perry.
It's all about handwritten typography, I recommend.

See me demonstrate my X-ray vision, splendid.

The second one being "Art and Design of Gama-Go".
Nothing that will blow your mind away, but just fun character art.
I figure I can produce close to that quality of art, so it's good as a reference.

If you get both books I think you'll notice my moose-stache being heavily inspired by the two.

Beautiful Lies

Making a logo/album cover for a band called Beautiful Lies,
I don't make logos... ever.

This one just came to me.
Actually it took about 2 hours of brainstorming.

The main assignment given to me was to make an album cover.
It's to help my friend Chris Hansen with one of his projects.
He has to promote a band for his record label class.
So what better way then with some nice new art, right?
Hire up a designer and get em workin' on it.

I'm done with making things to how I think people would like them.
All I want is just to do my own thing and if people like that,
then they can hire me.
I'm not sure if that's the correct way to look at things,
but I make better art that way.

Refusing to make anything cheesy I had to think hard.
I made a list of what represents lies and beauty,
nothing good was coming to mind.

Then it hit me, an optical illusion!
It's a beautiful lie, and I can use it as a logo!

Then I looked up cool album covers, listed them down.

Placing the logo dead center on a flat background,
simple but perfect.

The only thing is the B is jagged, but whatevs.
I got the rest of the CD to worry about now.

That is if Chris and his group approve of this.
I actually gotta perfect it a little more, I quickly did it in illustrator.

Ice Box Brownies

I got the illustrations & t-shirt designs done for my portfolio.
Now all I need are a couple designs and logos.
Again I'm gearing my design skills to more cartoon youthful styles,
seeing as it seems to be my niche.

Here's a design for a brownie box, I'm still working on it.
I decided to make the main character a brownie (mythical creature).
He's so cute I could just give him a big ol' hug,
and in the process I'd probably kill him...
Brownies are very tiny.

Side Note: Outside my neighbors keep their annoying birds,
so everyone can hear them.
Their owners have now taught them how to do a cat call whistle...
they never stop.
I went outside to empty the trash,
and I got hooted and hollared at by 5 birds at once.
It was great, it made me feel very flattered.

Octopus Sweatshirt Idea

Not sure if this could easily be done,
but I'd love to see the backs of people wearing sweatshirts if they were octopuses.
It would even look good with the hood off, hairy head octopus.

A friend of mine,
Keith Noordzy (talented illustrator & squid hunter)
apparently has copyrights to all things with tentacles.
So, please don't sue me.

Stressed out to the max

Extreme stress is weird,
It makes me physically feel weak,
and I have nightmares of my teeth falling out.

apparently it's a common stress dream, who knew?

Anyway I quickly re-did this "I Rule"

I'm going to take out the background and make it into a t-shirt design.

Hopefully this weekend I can finally get
some things done and some of this extreme stress will be lifted.
I can't take another dream where I have no teeth.

Getting Places

About one month ago I threw together a portfolio...
That's just the problem, it was thrown together.
If I want to be taken seriously I figure i'll
need a really nice snazzy portfolio that really sells
me as an illustrator.

I'm sticking to my cartoon style only in this one.
I figure that's what I do best, and it'll give the portfolio
a more put together look.

So here's the front page I made last night.
I'm gonna be working on it all day today, and
whatever it takes tomorrow.

Michigan

I went home for a little over a week.
These are the woods I grew up in, wild child.
Many memories of riding bikes 24/7
only stopping to pick black berries and strawberries.
Mind you they're really tiny in the wild, so it's not much for snacking.

Loved this day out to the field to with Zeb.
Saw a huge bald eagle, and some people riding horses...
had to lie low...
The field is separate from the woods and is private property.
In Zebs favor, he matches the field.

Good Times

I thought real swords had to be kept behind glass and or locked up.
Don't put em out in front of us and expect people to resist temptations.
Who could turn down swinging a real geeky samurai sword in the mall?!

Bite Your Thumb T-shirt Line

I have a company name I registered a few years ago,
called "Bite Your Thumb".
Didn't really know when the day would come
when I'd actually use the name, but alas... it's here.
It came from a slight obsession with shakespeare, but I digress.
There's going to be 10 new designs, i'll be updating as I go along.

Skeleton T-shirts are out, vein T-shirts are in.

Screen Saver

For some reason at my work I'm the jack of all trades for side art jobs,
so they had me take a bunch of pictures downstairs of their equipment.
They have a bunch of rad old electronics down there.
Since I dig old vintage pictures of electronics, I took the liberty of taking just a couple pictures for my own use.
I have no idea what this is, but say hello to my new desktop

Unkept

This is one of the few illustrations that I threw into my portfolio.
There's a few illustration jobs I'd like to try out for,
and so I needed a portfolio fast.
Over the weekend I realized that
I ought to really save all my original files...
Up until now most of my projects
I've only used to just merely display on the web.
Makes going back and making a portfolio a pain in the neck.
Also need to save in my original concept sketches,
and note down when I create projects.

Learning!

I'm doing too many things at once.

Little Nemo

I loved the Little Nemo as a kid.
Then about 5 years ago I got to liking Ghibli, and noticed a link between the two.
Apparently there was a team up and Ghibli was helping in creating the movie,
but they ended up pulling out of the deal.
However...
there is still this pilot from 1984

very similar to the movie, but just anime.
It's kinda cool seeing it done this way, except...
whats up with Nemo not talking?

The video game is one of my all time faves

Home

I love speed painting backgrounds, esp of Traverse City peninsula.
It's my favorite place to go swimming in all of Lake Michigan, good memories.
Like most of Michigan, you go through thick forrest and then all of a sudden it halts to reveal sandy beaches and crystal blue waters.

I also love this photo,
which further more solidifies my description of "forrest to sandy beach".

Concept Prints

I didn't spend much time on this, but It looks pretty good to me.
Would really like to make this into a print, I'm gonna make it happen this week.

Morning Routine

I've decided to start sketching at least two people in the morning.
Gotta keep it at a low so I'll keep up with it.
I tend to be more artistic in the morning,
I guess I just dont over think things then.

Here's todays

Freelancing for E!

Keep your eyes peeled when watching E!
you might see some of my work making a debut real soon.
A friend (who works for E!) asked me to illustrate
some childrens drawings of Alice in Wonderland.
I guess they needed em' for a show they're doing.
Threw my hair up in pig tails,
got out a big piece of paper, opened a box of new crayolas,
layed down on the floor with my legs kicking,
and got to work.

Apparently it's hard to draw like a kid,
but not if you are mentally challenged like myself.

I don't mess around, I pay deep attention to details.

Notice the following
• backwards "L"
• everything has the same smile
• blob hands

All of them, things only a child would do.

I'm a star

Flyer Update

Latest Update:
I know it's not perfect, but I'm going with it.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
I still have to update some text,
but this is the direction I'm going with.
Really am having a lot of fun with this one, a lot of free creativity.
Recently this past month or so I've gotten a kick start back into art.
I have some strong motivation for once, not sure exactly why.
Actually I think this blog has brought it on,
I've become enthralled by it.

Flyer

A DJ asked me to make a flyer for his house party,
so this is my first rough pitch.
I'm sticking to Helvetica,
I think the disco ball is distracting and crazy enough as it is.
I'm stopping where I'm at because I'm done for the night,
it's too stuffy in this room & i need rest.
Here's hoping he digs!

I like it, even if nobody else does.

I think im going to forward this sketch and make this little guy into a real character.

Yes I've always hated comic sans...

I think it only works with the Sims.
Even then... there's a better font for the job.

What a horrible font, it sums up all thats wrong in the world.
It's used by people for any dreadful announcement.

• Lost your pet? Comic Sans.
• Stupid Fundraiser? Comic Sans.
• PTA Meeting? Comic Sans.
